Northwest Park
August 2020 Update
The results from the community survey have been collected and are now being analyzed to help determine the amenities to include in a proposed site plan for the park. Once the proposed site plan has been developed, additional outreach will be done to collect feedback from residents.
Background & Overview
City Commission approval in April marked a pivotal moment for the development of the northwest park. The 78-acre parcel, which sits near the corner of Mission and Fred George roads, was acquired in 1995. As part of the property acquisition, the prior owner specifically requested that the land be used for a future park, and it has been earmarked for that use ever since.
The City is committed to creating this park in a balanced way that provides the desired active recreational amenities and preserves and enhances passive recreation areas. As such and with funding now available, a natural features inventory and tree survey are currently being conducted on the parcel. To ensure that as much of the natural features are preserved as possible, the tree survey is identifying trees with diameters of 6 inches or more, which is 6 inches smaller than the industry standard of 12 inches or more. This data will be used to develop the final placement of requested amenities within the site plan, which is currently being designed.
The northwest park is slated to be a comprehensive facility that provides amenities not otherwise available nearby that are enjoyed by residents in other parts of the community. Providing these amenities, which the community has been requesting since property acquisition in 1995, will be balanced with maintaining the beautiful natural areas and trees found on the property. With opportunities for both active and passive recreation, this park will provide greater access to a wider variety of opportunities for thousands of residents.
Throughout the process, there will be community outreach to allow residents to discuss ideas and provide feedback to staff. Residents who have comments to share now, are encouraged to do so using the form below.
