Commission Appoints New City Auditor

At tonight's Tallahassee City Commission meeting, Commissioners approved the employment contract for the newly selected City Auditor, Dennis Sutton. Last week, the Commission voted to offer Sutton the appointed position.

"Dennis Sutton has long been an integral part of the City's auditing team, and it was a unanimous decision by the Commission to appoint him as the City Auditor," Mayor John Dailey said. "He brings a wealth of organizational and professional knowledge to this vital position in our City government. Quality audits further enhance the efficient and effective delivery of City services to Tallahassee residents."

Sutton has more than 25 years of experience in auditing and accounting. He has worked for the City since 1999, serving most recently as its Audit Manager.

Prior to joining the City, Sutton worked with several local public accounting firms, as well as the Florida Association of Counties. Upon conclusion of his service in the United States Army in 1990, Sutton attended Tallahassee Community College and Florida State University, earning a bachelor's degree in accounting in 1994. He obtained his Certified Public Accountant (CPA) license in 1996 and earned the Certified Internal Auditor (CIA) designation from the Institute of Internal Auditors in 2004. He is a member of the Association of Local Government Auditors, Institute of Internal Auditors, Association of Government Accountants and Florida Government Finance Officers Association. 

The City Auditor is one of four executive positions appointed by the City Commission. The position oversees seven employees, including six auditors. The Office of the City Auditor provides the City Commission with an independent, objective and comprehensive auditing program of City operations; advances accountability through the provision of assurance and advisory services; and actively works with appointed officials in identifying risks, evaluating controls and making recommendations that promote economical, efficient and effective delivery of City services.

He will begin work in the new position on July 22. Sutton and his wife reside in Tallahassee and have two adult children.
