Ziffer Named Municipal Official of the Year
May 23, 2018
At tonight's Tallahassee City Commission meeting, the Northwest Florida League of Cities (NWFLC) recognized Commissioner Gil Ziffer as the Municipal Official of the Year.
The presentation of the award, which was originally made public at the NWFLC annual conference earlier this month where he was also named a Home Rule Hero, recognizes Commissioner Ziffer for his outstanding commitment to the citizens of Tallahassee, the NWFLC and the Florida League of Cities. This is the second time that Commissioner Ziffer has been named Municipal Official of the Year; the first time was in 2014. It is the fifth time he has been honored as a Home Rule Hero. Commissioner Ziffer currently serves as the President of the Florida League of Cities.
"Having been a Home Rule advocate for both the Northwest Florida League of Cities and the Florida League of Cities since 2011, I am humbled to receive these awards," Commissioner Ziffer said. "Local government determines and delivers the quality of life services for all of us, which is why local government best responds to local needs."
Ziffer's service to Tallahassee spans more than three decades. Since moving to Tallahassee in 1983, he's been engaged in helping community organizations as a volunteer, board member and in leadership. His first elected position was as Seat 4 Supervisor for the Capital Region Community Development District (Southwood) in the November 2008 General Election. In August 2009, he was selected to serve the balance of the term for Tallahassee City Commission seat 5. In August 2010, he was elected to a four-year term on the City Commission and re-elected in 2014.
His impact on the city has been vast, with a major focus on those in need - from children and the homeless to human service and cultural arts.
Also at the NWFLC annual conference earlier this month, Assistant City Manager Wayne Tedder was named a Home Rule Hero. The Home Rule Hero Awards are given to government officials who work tirelessly to advance the League's legislative agenda and help protect the home rule authority of Florida's cities during the most recent legislative session.
