Gil Ziffer Elected Florida League of Cities President

Today, Tallahassee Mayor Pro Tem Gil Ziffer was elected by membership at the Florida League of Cities (FLC) 91st Annual Conference to serve as president for 2017-18.

During the coming year, Ziffer’s “Let Cities Work!” initiative will focus on defending local autonomy. Home Rule reflects the concept that the closer government is to the people, the more effective, fair and responsive it will be. This initiative strives to support Home Rule efforts, which allow Florida cities to address and respond to the unique needs of their citizens and preserve the qualities that make each community special.

“Cities continue to lead Florida in population and economic growth by delivering the services only local government can provide,” Ziffer said. “We are the government closest to the people and are therefore able to respond to our resident's needs more efficiently and timely.”

Ziffer has been an active Home Rule advocate for both the Northwest Florida League of Cities and the Florida League of Cities since 2011, earning the 2017 Home Rule Hero Award.

He has served on the Tallahassee City Commission since 2009 when he was selected to serve the balance of the seat 5 term. In August 2010, he was elected to a full four-year term on the City Commission and subsequently re-elected in 2014.
