New City Auditor Set to Start in July

May 25, 2018

At this week's Tallahassee City Commission Meeting, Commissioners approved the employment contract for the newly selected City Auditor, Joseph Maleszewski. Today, that employment contract was signed by all parties. Last month, the Commission voted unanimously to offer Maleszewski the appointed position of City Auditor, following the retirement of former City Auditor Bert Fletcher in December 2017.

"As a long-time Tallahassee resident and public servant, I am excited to be selected by the Tallahassee City Commission to serve as the next City Auditor," Maleszewski said. "I expect to continue and build upon the high level of service the Commission is accustomed to from the Office of the City Auditor and its highly-experienced staff members. I am committed to earning the trust and respect of the Commission, City management, City employees and the community we serve."

Maleszewski brings nearly 30 years of experience to the City. He began his career as an internal auditor for the Florida Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services in 1991. Throughout the years, he has practiced responsible auditing for four state agencies, including the Departments of Economic Opportunity and Transportation. From May 2012 to September 2013, Maleszewski served as Inspector General at one of those agencies before going to work as Inspector General and Director of Compliance for the Board of Governors of the State University System. He holds a bachelor's and master's degree from Florida State University, as well as multiple professional certifications. Maleszewski is also active in several professional associations, including the Institute of Internal Auditors (IIA).

The City Auditor is one of four executive positions appointed by the City Commission. The position oversees seven employees, including five auditors. The Office of the City Auditor provides the City Commission with an independent, objective and comprehensive auditing program of City operations; advances accountability through the provision of assurance and advisory services; and actively works with appointed officials in identifying risks, evaluating controls and making recommendations that promote economical, efficient and effective delivery of City services. Maleszewski will begin work on July 9, earning an annual salary of $143,640.

Maleszewski and his wife, Tracey, reside in Tallahassee and have four children.
