Mayor to Attend Signing of Bipartisan Safer Communities Act

Federal Legislation Aims to Reduce the Threat of Violence Across the Country

July 08, 2022

At the invitation of President of the United States Joe Biden, Mayor John E. Dailey will represent Tallahassee in Washington, D.C., at the signing of the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act on Monday, July 11. The signing is slated to occur at 11 a.m.

According to Senators supporting the legislation, the Bipartisan Safer Communities Act "is a commonsense, bipartisan proposal to protect America's children, keep our schools safe, and reduce the threat of violence across our country." It will provide support for state crisis intervention orders, protections for victims of domestic violence, investment in children and family mental health services, funding for school-based mental health and supportive services, clarification of the definition of Federally Licensed Firearms Dealer, an enhanced review process for gun buyers under the age of 21 and more.

Public safety has been a top priority for the Tallahassee City Commission, as outlined in the City's five-year Strategic Plan. Most recently, the Mayor and Commissioners voted unanimously to allocate $1 million in the upcoming budget toward efforts that reduce gun violence. Their leadership has also led to the establishment of the TEAM Unit to respond to emergency calls related to mental health and furthered the impact of the TEMPO program that seeks to identify, engage and reconnect Disconnected Youth to educational and employment opportunities, in addition to other public safety neighborhood initiatives. "This bipartisan legislation aligns with our community's focus on public safety, and I am honored to have been invited by the President to witness this pivotal act being made law," Tallahassee Mayor John E. Dailey said. "It's more important than ever that all levels of government work to address these issues, which is why I, along with my colleagues on the City Commission, voted to allocate $1 million toward further ensuring the safety of Tallahassee residents."
