It is the policy of the City of Tallahassee to give preference to eligible veterans and spouses of veterans in appointment to non-exempted vacant positions and retention in employment in accordance with Florida Statutes s.295.085. Download or print the Veteran's Preference Information Sheet (48kb PDF) for more information on the City's process.

Effective July 1, 2007 – Changes to the Florida Statutes provide that an eligible person may claim Veterans' Preference more than once. Visit the Florida Department of Veteran Affairs website for full information on Veteran's Preference

Effective July 1, 2021 – To promote veteran employment, new state legislation authorizes state and political subdivisions ‎to waive certain postsecondary educational requirements for employment for certain ‎service members and veterans. In addition to requiring each political subdivision to develop ‎and implement a veterans’ recruitment plan, it modifies point preferences given to veterans ‎and their family members when a numerically based selection process is used for hiring. IMPORTANT: In order to receive Veteran's Preference, an applicant for a City position who is claiming Veterans Preference must attach/upload a DD214 and/or other applicable documentation of his/her veterans' status at the time of application, and with each application submitted.
