Code Enforcement

There are two types of code enforcement in the City of Tallahassee. The Environmental Services Department enforces building code, environmental, zoning, stormwater, and commercial sign regulations. Some common violations handled by Environmental Services are:

  • Doing construction without a permit
  • Runoff from another property onto your property
  • Improper stormwater pond maintenance
  • Digital signs that are too bright or changing messages too fast
  • Businesses operating in areas not zoned for that use

A description of the flow process for code enforcement reportsPrivate property code violations, such as overgrown yards, unsafe structures, abandoned vehicles, and illegal signs in the right-of-way are handled by the Housing & Community Resilience Department.

We know that might be confusing, so you can submit suspected violations for either type online. Or you can contact us and we’ll be happy to get you to the right place:

  • During business hours, call 850-891-7007 for private property violations & signs in the ROW.
  • During business hours, call 850-891-8858 for building, environmental, zoning & commercial sign violations.

Either way, the process shown in the flowchart is the same! Agendas for upcoming hearings can be found online.

Please note that Florida law no longer allows anonymous complaints.
