PREP (Plan for Readiness and Emergency Preparedness)

Hurricane season runs from June 1 to November 30, and the City is actively preparing. Citizens play a vital role in surviving and recovering from a disaster, so residents should also make and review their emergency plans and preparations.

Planning together with your neighborhood increases overall community safety and helps provide a coordinated response to disaster recovery activities. To guide residents through the planning process, the City offers its Neighborhood Plan for Readiness and Emergency Preparedness (PREP) program.

The City of Tallahassee urges residents to take the steps necessary to prepare and protect their families, property and pets. In this colorful guide, you’ll learn what to do before, during and after storms, as well as information about City services. You can download the Step by Step Prep guide and get a jump start on being prepared.

About the PREP Program

Citizens play a vital role in surviving and recovering from a disaster. In partnership with the City of Tallahassee, individuals and households can develop a plan to help keep their families and property safe during emergencies and have a coordinated response to disaster recovery activities.

PREP for Neighborhood Leaders

The PREP Guide for Neighborhood Leaders provides neighborhood leaders a structured and easy process to work through with residents. When implemented, it will help neighbors become more self-sufficient and better prepared for disasters and other emergencies.

The Guide features four modules and downloadable forms and templates that neighborhood leaders can use to organize their neighborhoods. The modules present a suggested framework that can be customized to best fit the needs of each neighborhood.

Prepping Transportation with StarMetro

StarMetro Storm Operations:

• StarMetro vehicles are not allowed to operate in winds reaching sustained speeds of 35 mph or through flooded streets.
• StarMetro helps transportation-dependent residents get safely to and from emergency shelters. For this service, you must be registered with the Department of Health prior to the onset of an emergency shelter situation.

Storm Prep Transit Tips:

• Identify alternative routes or transportation options for your essential needs in case StarMetro cannot operate.
• Pre-arrange for a safe shelter-in-place option, especially if congregating with others in community shelters is a health risk.
• Transportation is limited to the individual registered. Family, friends, caregivers and others are not guaranteed transportation or accommodation.
• Purchase and pack your essential item bags. Each rider is limited to only TWO self-carry bags.

Dial-A-Ride service and fixed route service will provide shelter transportation only as directed by Leon County Emergency Management.

If you require medical supervision or are electricity dependent, if qualified, you can be evacuated to a Special Needs Shelter. To register as a person with special needs, please contact the Leon County Division of Emergency Management at (850) 606-3700.
