The Jake Gaither Community Center is located just five minutes from the Florida Agricultural and Mechanical University. Built in 1964 and named after legendary FAMU Coach Jake Gaither, the facility serves many Tallahassee area residents. The multi-purpose community center is built on 120 acres of property, and includes classroom/meeting rooms, a playground, picnic shelters/grills, two lighted tennis courts, a softball field, and a nine hole municipal golf course. The Beta Alpha Chapter of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority Incorporated donated funds through the Tallahassee Friends of Our Parks Foundation, Inc. and provided volunteer labor to assist in renovating the Jake Gaither Community Center Playground in 2001.
Enhancements to the now 12,000 square foot center include the addition of a bleacher seating area in the gym, expanded classroom/meeting room space, kitchen, computer lab, and the addition of a weight room. Other improvements include ADA accessibility upgrades, the addition of sustainable features such as waterless urinals designed to save the city over 40,000 gallons of water a year and a new metal roof. A state-of-the art voice actuated safety system was installed, and walls were "hurricane hardened" throughout the entire building.
