Weems Road

Weems Road is Now Open

The Weems Pedestrian and Street Safety project included enhancements from Mahan Drive south to the railroad tracks related to mobility, safety and utility infrastructure. With plans to fully complete the work by October, the road was officially opened to traffic on Monday, Sept. 14. Complementing these enhancements is the recently completed Weems Road Extension, which extends the roadway north of Mahan Drive to connect with Capital Circle Northeast.

The construction of a sidewalk on the west side of the road and a 12-foot-wide multi-use trail on the east side of the road provides an opportunity for pedestrians and cyclists to travel Weems Road safely and conveniently. The new roundabout located at Weems Road and Dartmouth Drive will help improve traffic flow, particularly for residents in the Weems Plantation neighborhood. Upgrades to the stormwater and roadway drainage system will help alleviate flooding that has historically occurred in the area.

Opening last month, the extension creates an alternate route around one of Tallahassee’s busiest intersections at Capital Circle and Mahan Drive, while also enhancing mobility with the addition of a 10-foot-wide multi-use trail. The trail, which runs alongside the east side of the roadway, connects to Goose Pend Trail as part of the Greenway Master Plan.

Combined, these projects represent an investment of more than $20 million by the City of Tallahassee to build connections, enhance mobility, provide quality infrastructure and ultimately strengthen the community.
