The City of Tallahassee will soon begin construction of the Railroad Avenue Improvements Project. To enhance safety and mobility options in your area, the City is developing plans for utility, roadway and sidewalk improvements along Railroad Avenue from Railroad Square to Gaines Street.
The project will include creating a multi-use trail on the west side of the roadway, installing landscaped medians and new pedestrian crossings, repaving the road, and using roadway design elements that tie FAMU Way and Gaines Street together. Additionally, the majority of the overhead electric lines within the project bounds will be moved underground.
The City hosted an in-person, open house style community meeting on June 9 at the Residence Inn on Gaines Street. Thank you to everyone who attended to learn more and discuss the project with staff from the City’s Underground Utilities and Public Infrastructure department. If you were unable to attend, staff is available to meet with you or provide information. Please contact Randy Lane, Program Engineer with the City, at Randy.Lane@Talgov.com.
The project is slated to go to bid spring 2023 with construction beginning fall 2023. Once underway, the project is anticipated to last roughly 12 months, weather permitting. Additional outreach will be done prior to construction.

To accommodate construction, it will be necessary to close portions of various streets during the workday. Road closures will be as brief as possible, and residents will always have access to their property during construction. All detours will be clearly marked to route traffic around the construction zone.
