Who May Report Something: Anyone, even if you are not a City of Tallahassee Utilities customer

Utility Theft

Reporting utility theft helps lower rates and protects our community. Utility theft is a growing problem facing our community and utility industry. When a utility is illegally used, it can result in fire, flooding, hazardous conditions, property damage, bodily injury, or even death. This directly impacts our customer’s safety, and produces higher rates.

Utility theft is a serious crime. Under Section 812.14 of the Florida Statutes, someone convicted of utility theft can be fined $1,000 or up to three times the cost of the utility stolen, in addition to facing up to a year in prison. City of Tallahassee ordinance No. 87-0-0108 also provides for a $150 tampering fee, the cost to repair or replace any equipment damaged, plus the usage of the utility stolen estimated by the City Manager.
