What to Do When Your Pet is Missing

Lost pet posterIf you lost your pet and you do not see him on the Found page, here are some tips on making sure he finds his way back home:

Search Thoroughly

  • Explore the house and yard first! Your pet may be hiding, stuck or closed in a room, shed or garage. Shaking treats, toys or food that they like can lure them out quickly.
  • Check around your home area, alerting your neighbors in the process.

Post Online

  • Complete our Lost Pet Report
  • Check our Found Pet listings every day
  • Post their photo and description on your own social media pages, as well as these others:
    • Facebook lost/found groups & pet groups for Tallahassee
    • Nextdoor.com
    • Craigslist.com (lost, found & pets section)
    • Pawboost.com
    • Lostdogsflorida.org
    • Lost.petcolove.org
    • 24petconnect.com
    • Any social media groups for your neighborhood/complex

Flyer the Area

  • Make a pet poster with your contact information and a color photo of your pet. Label it with a bold heading: "LOST DOG" or "MISSING CAT" make sure to put your pet's breed, sex, age, weight, any unique markings/features and where it was last seen.
  • Post the flyers in your area & offer them to neighbors on your search.
  • Hang flyers in vet offices, community centers, pet supply stores & any common areas people are known to gather in your neighborhood.

Contact Everyone

  • Call your pet's microchip company so they can list that he is registered as missing. Make sure your contact information is current with them!
  • Call your vet & the emergency vet clinics (Allied, Northwood & Capital Veterinary Specialists). Be prepared to provide them a flyer too!

Don't give up your search
If you follow the suggestions above, you'll help increase your pet's chances of ending up back home. Make sure to check our Found animal listings regularly and keep your animal's microchip information current. We've reunited animals who have been missing from their families for years! Always remember that some lost animals have found their own way back home.
