The Gaines Street Art Alley, located in the Gaines Street / All Saints district, runs parallel to and east of Railroad Avenue and functions both as a pedestrian walkway and eclectic public art exhibit. The Alley connects Gaines Street to Saint Francis Street, on the west side of St. Michael's Pub and behind Crepevine. With the untiring efforts of Florida State University's art professor, Paul Rutkovsky, along with other students and community volunteers, the Alley has been cleaned of debris and garbage, turning a once blighted easement into a public art forum.
Over the last few years, the Alley has become more than a diversion - it has turned into an urban pathway that provides a venue for cultural events and art installations, along with a pleasant walking experience for pedestrians who might be taking a shortcut to the surrounding locally owned retail shops.
Current Conditions
Currently, the Alley faces several challenges such as flooding from stormwater runoff, erosion, loitering, safety issues and accessibility.
What Art Alley Will Become
The City of Tallahassee and several community partners have developed a plan to transform the Alley into an attractive and functional pedestrian pathway with an outdoor art gallery. The improved Alley will have a stabilized pathway made from Trex, lighting, gabion walls, additional plantings, and will continue to be a place for the display of outdoor art.
